Fire Ban Now in Effect

July 29, 2016

News Release

The Township of Douro-Dummer Chief Fire Official has declared an open air fire ban, effective immediately.

Due to the continued dry conditions in the Township of Douro-Dummer, as well as data from the Wildland Fire Information System, the Township is enabling a fire ban through By-law 2015-05. No open air burning will be allowed, with the exception of campgrounds as defined within the By-law. These campgrounds must meet the requirements set out in the By-law if they choose to utilize the exemption.

Another factor for enacting this fire ban, is that some water sources are no longer available which could lead to shuttling water from further distances, delaying extinguishment.

“We hope that conditions change and we can all enjoy the recreational fires that memories are made from, but until that time please be responsible with all ignition sources, including cigarettes that have already caused fires along the side of roadways” says Fire Chief Chuck Pedersen

Signs will be posted at most major intersections within the Township and information is available on our website at

Enforcement of set fires during a fire ban may result in a $500 penalty as well as response to extinguish such fires can be charged at $450 per fire apparatus.

20% Water Conservation Encouraged – Level 2 Low Water Conditions being experienced

Rainfall continues to be in short supply across the Otonabee Region watershed. As a result, the Otonabee Region Water Response Team confirms that Level 2 Low Water Conditions are being experienced throughout the watershed region.

Analysis of the data, including air temperature, precipitation, and stream flow for the first 6 months of 2016, indicate that every month, except March, experienced below normal precipitation receipts.

“Without rainfall, streams and groundwater supplies are not being naturally replenished. It’s up to all of us to do what we can to conserve water, using it wisely as we go about our daily activities,” says Gordon Earle, Water Resources Technologist with Otonabee Conservation.

Under a Level 2 Low Water Condition, residents, businesses, industries and municipalities are encouraged to voluntarily reduce their water use by 20%.

Otonabee Conservation encourages everyone apply water conservation measures in their daily routine. Non-essential water uses should be suspended until natural water supplies recover. Those who hold a Permit to Take Water from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change are asked to reduce their water taking by 20% as well.

The Otonabee Region watershed encompasses the drainage areas of the Otonabee, Indian and Ouse Rivers within the municipalities of Asphodel-Norwood, Cavan Monaghan, Douro-Dummer, Otonabee South Monaghan, Selwyn, City of Peterborough, City of Kawartha Lakes and Trent Hills.

The Otonabee Region Water Response Team is made up of representatives from local municipalities, water management agencies, tourism and agriculture, provincial and federal agencies and Otonabee Conservation.

Otonabee Conservation will continue to monitor watershed conditions over the next several weeks. The Level 2 Low Water Condition, urging water conservation of 20%, will remain in effect until further notice.

For more information please visit the Otonabee Region Conservation Authority website.

Warsaw Benefit Cruise Night to be held August 3, 2016

Benefit Cruise Night in Warsaw
Wednesday, August 3, 2016

Details have now been firmed up for the 2016 Benefit Cruise Night in the Warsaw Lions Park. The annual fundraising event is spearhead by the Warsaw Lions Club and supported by the Township of Douro-Dummer, all local service groups and many, many community volunteers and businesses.

It will be held on Wednesday, August 3rd with the gates to the Lions Park opening at 4:00 p.m. Rain dates if needed, will be on succeeding Wednesday nights.

This year, all proceeds will be divided between the families of 16 year old Jessica Pluard, (diagnosed with an Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia) and 4 year old Max Deutekom (with Sturgis Weber Syndrome). Both families live on Douro’s 4th Line.

This is a wonderful opportunity for the entire community to ‘lend a helping hand’ to two families who are going through a very difficult time.

The evening features prize draws & raffles, great food on the BBQ, music and live entertainment by Victoria Pearce and her Patsy Cline Show.

Last year saw a huge turnout of classic cars and people who generated more than $23,000 for young Dori Parkhurst.

Cash and Prize donations are gratefully received. If you or your business can help in anyway, please contact the Douro-Dummer Township office at 705-652-8392 or Elsie Tedford at 705-652-8348.

Prize donations are gratefully received and should be dropped off at the Douro-Dummer Township Office in Warsaw by July 28th.
