Financial Statement and Auditor’s Report (Section 88 Municipal Elections Act)

The Elections Act requires a candidate to file a financial statement. The deadline for filing financial statements for the reporting period ending December 31, 2018 was on or before 2:00 PM, March 29, 2019. A candidate who misses the filing deadline may file within a 30 day grace period, provided that a $500.00 late filing fee is paid to the municipality.

The Elections Act stipulates that candidates whose campaign contributions and total expenses are greater than $10,000 must have their financial statement audited and submit the auditor’s report to the Clerk along with their financial statement. The auditor’s report shall be prepared by an auditor licensed under the Public Accounting Act, 2004.

Refund of Nomination Filing Fee (Section 34 Municipal Elections Act)

A candidate is entitled to receive a refund of the nomination filing fee if the documents required under subsection 88.25 (1) are filed on or before 2 p.m. on the filing date in accordance with that subsection.

Financial Statements Filed in the 2018 Municipal Election
All 2018 Municipal and School Board candidates are required to complete a Financial Statement (Form 4) for all contributions and incurred expenses during the campaign period.

As required by Section 88.23 of the Municipal Elections Act, (MEA) the clerk shall make available to the public a report setting out all candidates in an election and indicating whether each candidate complied with Section 88.25 of the MEA. The report shall be made available on the website as soon as possible after April 30th in the year following the election.
