Launch of Township Twitter Account – March 1, 2017

Douro-Dummer, ON – The Township of Douro-Dummer is pleased to announce the public launch of their new Twitter account.

Through the use of Twitter the public will be able to engage with the Township online and receive information regarding Township event and news. Online social networking sites are frequently used as mediums to gather and share updates online. By providing this service, residents will be able to stay connected to their community in a timely manner.

We encourage all our residents to visit the Township’s Twitter account, and follow and share our page. You can find us on Twitter by searching Douro-Dummer (@Douro_Dummer).

We are pleased to be able to offer our residents a multitude of ways to communicate with the Township and provide a reliable source of information.

Media Release – Road Conditions

Road Conditions – February 21, 2017

Due to the winter weather that we have been experiencing – four major rainfalls, two freezing rain storms, and the very mild temperatures – has caused many of our gravel roads to develop holes. Unfortunately, with these freeze and thaw conditions, it is very difficult to improve our gravel roads. Applying gravel to the roads when the frost is partially coming out will create road conditions that cannot be driven on by the travelling public; trucks will do more damage to the road, the gravel will not adhere to the road and after a snowfall the gravel ends up being plowed off the roads. Grading the roads under the same conditions (with the frost coming out and wet roads), can cause 6 to 8 inches of sloppy gravel that the motoring public will not be able to travel on either.

We do sympathize with our ratepayers who are travelling these roads on a daily basis and we will address these issues as weather conditions allow us to do something. Once the weather becomes colder and it snows, the holes will be filled when we plow the roads, which will create a temporary fix. However, during spring thaw the road conditions we are experiencing now could return and we will do what we can to minimize this impact.

Council has a multi-year road plan in place to continue to improve our road infrastructure and we encourage our residents to contact the Manager of Public Works (Harold Nelson) to address any questions or concerns regarding our roads.

Nomination Period Opens for 2017 Peterborough County Recognition Awards

The County of Peterborough invites nominations for the County of Peterborough 2017 Recognition Awards. Nominations will be accepted for any resident or group residing in the County of Peterborough who has raised the profile or made an extraordinary contribution to our community. The nominee shall not have received a County of Peterborough Recognition Award for a similar category within the last fifteen years. Unless otherwise indicated, there shall be one award for each Township in each category noted below:

Accessibility Recognition: A group, individual or business who has contributed to accessibility improvements within the County of Peterborough. (One County-wide award.)

Acts of Heroism: An individual who has displayed bravery in the face of personal risk, injury or death at an incident that took place either in the County of Peterborough or was to the benefit of a Peterborough County resident and which action did not occur while the individual was acting in his/her professional capacity while on duty. (Unlimited nominations.)

Agricultural Leadership: Any individual or farm enterprise is eligible to be nominated in this category. Factors that will be used to assess the nomination will include such items as innovations, agricultural promotion and the recognition brought to the County through its operation. It may include involvement in agricultural organizations. Leadership in the agricultural community will also be considered.

Business Leadership / Entrepreneurial Innovation: Any new and successful initiatives of both new and established businesses that have made outstanding contributions to the County, including tourism promotion.

Community Volunteer of the Year: Any group or individual who has demonstrated community involvement or volunteerism within the County.

Environmental/Sustainability Recognition: Nominees will have demonstrated innovation and/or leadership in environmental conservation, stewardship and sustainability by having:
Developed innovative green technologies or
Started businesses to support and encourage sustainable living, or
Donated conservation lands or easements or
Undertaken ecosystem restoration or research or
Educated others about the importance of protecting the environment or
Achieved the overall vision for sustainability through one of the identified theme areas set out in the Sustainable Peterborough Plan:Agriculture and Local Food; Climate Change; Cultural Assets; Economic Development and Employment; Healthy Communities; Land Use Planning; Natural Assets; Energy; Transportation; Waste; and Water. (One County-wide award.)

Heritage Preservation: An individual or group who has promoted heritage and preserves the history of Peterborough County. This could include, but is not limited to, Fair boards, Women’s Institutes, historical societies, etc. A community, public or private organization which has reached a significant milestone such as the 100th anniversary of the organization is also eligible for this award. (Please note: Birthdays and anniversaries are recognized on an on-going basis as requested.)

Leadership in Arts and Culture: A group or individual who has demonstrated excellence in the arts, bringing recognition to the County.

Sporting Excellence: Any team or individual who has won a provincial, national or international sporting event. (One County-wide award.)

Youth: A person aged 25 years or younger who has contributed to the betterment of the community and/or school environment.

Nomination forms are available throughout the County at the County of Peterborough offices located at 470 Water Street, Peterborough, from any Local Municipal Office, Township Fire Chiefs, local Police Service Boards, schools, libraries throughout the County, area Chambers of Commerce and Community Care organizations. Completed and signed nomination forms with supporting documents provided to the County Clerk up to and including March 15, 2017 are requested.

The Peterborough County Awards and Bursaries Committee will review the Nominations and make recommendations to County Council. County Council will select and announce the recipients in May. The Recognition Awards Ceremony will take place on Friday, May 26, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. and will be hosted by the Township of North Kawartha. Parks and Recreation Master Plan Survey

The Township of Douro-Dummer along with the Parks and Recreation Master Plan Advisory Committee, would like to invite members of the public to share their input on Parks and Recreation facilities and programming within the Township by completing a community survey to assist in the development of the Parks and Recreation Master Plan.

Parks and Recreation Master Plan Public Meetings – All Invited

The Township of Douro-Dummer along with the Parks and Recreation Master Plan Advisory Committee, is pleased to announce the undertaking of the first Parks and Recreation Master Plan for the Township.

The purpose of this plan is to provide a vision and clear sense of direction for the Township. This plan will also identify and address public needs and priorities.

As part of this process the committee is undertaking public consultation efforts and would like to invite members of the public to share their input on Parks and Recreation facilities and programming within the Township.

“It’s critically important that we obtain input from as many of our residents as possible. We have a diverse community in Douro-Dummer and we are trying our best to meet the recreational needs of as many people as possible. We need your input.” Said the Mayor, J. Murray Jones.

The meetings will be held on the following dates:

Township of Douro-Dummer Requires an Administrative Assistant (Temporary)

The Township of Douro-Dummer, located in the heart of Peterborough County, with a permanent population of 6900, has a temporary position available for an Administrative Assistant. This position is an employee of the Township, is part of the Municipal Office Team and reports directly to the Clerk/Planning Coordinator.

The successful candidate will be required to have a Class “G” driver’s licence; a minimum of post secondary education or equivalent with a minimum of three (3) years related secretarial, business or municipal experience; a proven ability to use personal computers and associated software (Microsoft Office Suite, Publisher and Adobe), and word processing experience with accurate keyboarding skills. Familiarity with GIS software would be an asset. Successful completion of the Municipal Administration Program is preferred.

We are seeking an energetic and enthusiastic individual, with excellent communication skills, as well as a proven ability to deal with the public. We also require the successful candidate to have a proven ability to use initiative and judgment and to work without direct supervision.
